Why 411 Floral... there is always a story right?!
A few years ago, I was the program coordinator for a local floral association and was planning a workshop with a World Cup winning designer. To my surprise, it wasn’t filling up. This was a world class designer! Class fee was nominal! There were only 24 spots! And yet, it felt like it would not be a full class. So, I started to look for places I could post the class and get more reach. I had to sign up for over 20 social media groups, follow everyone and in some cases become a member of the group to post. I spent hours and days, lost track of it all and was very frustrated. In the end, the class sold out! Yes, success! But, the amount of effort and time it took was daunting. Funny thing is, there were STILL people that heard about the class AFTER it took place and expressed disappointment that they didn’t know about it.
I can not tell you how many times I’ve heard people complaining of not knowing about an event and wishing they had been able to attend. Likewise, educators complaining that their classes weren’t filling up and students only finding out about the class after the event. I, for sure, have felt this way frequently. I wished I had known what was happening in the floral world without having to spend soooooo much time to find out, or finding out about it before it was over.
I have heard so many “I wish I knew...” comments, that it got me thinking. There’s got to be a better way to communicate amongst us, right? After all, we are all looking for ways to improve ourselves or help others to do so.
